A Weihnachtspyramide, also known as a Christmas Pyramid, comes from the Ore Mountains of Germany. They can now be found all over Germany and parts of the United States.

It’s origin dates back to the Middle Ages of western and southern Europe and became a combination of Christmas tree construction and of capstans (a vertical axled rotating machine) which were used in the mines of the Ore’s Mountains.

These pyramids consist of a layered carousel, topped with a propeller which is powered by candles.

As the propeller spins, the layers rotate to create a moving scenery of holiday decor.

Most Weihnachtspyramide use small slender candles that are 4” in height and 1/2” in diameter and can be quite hard to find. Some Christmas Pyramids use a combination of tealights, votives or the small 4” candles also known as chime candles.

This Do It Yourself (DIY) idea will be the perfect decor for your holiday spread.

Here are the step by step instructions (compliments of MarthaStewart.com)

To make pumpkin votives with miniature pumpkins…

You will need

1. miniature pumpkins
2. tealight candles
3. floral cutters
4. a hand drilled fitted with a 1 1/2-inch-wide paddle bit

*”If possible get a second person to help: He or she can don a pair of work gloves and hold the pumpkin in place as you drill.”

1. Using the floral cutter trim the stem from the pumpkin.
2. Center the paddle drill over the pumpkin and drill about 1/2 inch deep.
3. Insert tealight. The pumpkin can be stored in a cool, dry spot for up to one day.
